Hobby Challenge – Progress So Far

Here’s a picture of the last Chaos Marine squad, all primed and ready for painting.

Don't They Look Lovely?

…And here’s a picture of the squad going almost right into Simple Green to strip the primer off.

Hobby Challenge October: Fax Castrum

For the last month of the hobby challenge, I will be completing the third “standard” space marine squad.

Fax Castrum - The Makings of Greatness

Fax Castrum – The Makings of Greatness

Obviously I’m not quite as far along as I would like to be at this point.  I wanted to have them primed by now, but as usual I needed to spend my time doing other things in addition to this.

As a note, I did not complete the Chosen over the past two weeks.  I was on the road again, and although the Chosen came with me I didn’t get more than two nights of painting in.

So here’s to a big finish on the hobby progress challenge.  Though I still have two vehicles left–plus the Chosen–it’s still good to have an army I can put on the table.

That’s a Lot of Plastic

Games Workshop is now offering as a 1-click purchase an entire space marine chapter.  1100+ models, only $15,000 CDN (+Tax)

It ain’t gonna happen (at least, not from my wallet).

…But there’s a tiny little voice whispering in my ear that says I don’t really need that new car

July Hobby Progress Challenge – Complete…

Yeah, I know.  It’s a month and a half late.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m fooling myself if I think I can get anything done over the summer.

So, direct from Eastern Better-Late-Than-Never, here is the Chaos Raptor squad known as Fraxites Argus.

Raptors Assembed

I finished cleaning and piecing everything together.  Since I’m going to be priming these fellows in pieces (makes it easier to cover everything), I took some reference shots to remember who got what bits.

Here’s the Aspiring Champion, magnetized with two different weapon loads.

And just in case that choice is truly terrible…

The Aspiring Champion, with Power Sword and Plasma Pistol

And the rest of the gang.

The Rest of the Squad

The Other Squad Members

I have two armed with bolt pistols and chainswords.  These are basically there to take hits while shielding the rest of the squad.  The other two will be armed with plasma guns, but I’ve magnetized the hands and the guns so I can swap out if needed.  I’ve really been thinking about replacing the plasma guns with melta-guns.  The range is much shorter, but the trade-off is being able to burn through nearly anything on the battlefield (if I can get close enough).

That Other Miniatures Game I Bought…

I also finished assembling the Dragon Lords fleet for Uncharted Seas.

Sorry if the image seems misty.  The camera lens was dirty and I didn’t notice until after I’d put my photography setup away.

I have to say, assembly was brutal.  In all fairness to Spartan Games, this was the original starter set for the Dragon Lords plus some extra models, most of which were cast before the models were resculpted.

Hobby Challenge July: Fraxites Argus

So, I’m back from my away time, but still looking at a busy few months ahead.  Ain’t summer always that way?

Next up, my Chaos Space Marine Raptors.

Clipped and Bagged for Safety

Clipped and Bagged for Safety

Just a squad of five.  The Aspiring champion gets power claws, two get plasma guns and the rest get the standard bolt pistol and chainsword.  I’m going to magnetize the special weapons, so I can swap the plasma guns for melta guns or flamers as needed.  I’m also going to magnetize the power claws on the aspiring champion.  I’m not all convinced that power claws are the right choice, cool though they may look, and I want the option to switch if needed.  I don’t know what a good alternate choice may be.  It’s been so long since I’ve looked at the codex I have no real idea.

Saturation

So Games Workshop has really upped the release speed of their codices and army lists, so much that something new seems to be coming out every month.  Here we are now halfway through the year with the Eldar out about a month ago for 40K, and rumours of Apocalypse and Space Marines around the corner (with, of course, the requisite models in addition to the books).  I’ve been reading on other blogs and forums of people half-jokingly lamenting the state of their bank accounts, but there’s an undercurrent of a very real situation of 40K players being not just forced to choose carefully what they buy, but being overwhelmed by choice.  Some may argue that this is a good place to be, that GW is finally filling in the gaps that needed filling for so long.  But is it really a good thing?

For me personally, I don’t think so.  Historically, I’ve been excited about every new release, even for the armies I don’t play and have no intention of collecting.  I loved seeing the cool models, the new art, the new rules.  But somewhere on the way to the release of the Eldar, it changed.  Excitement faded, and whatever remained became just a bit tinged with despair.  The frantic release schedule turned into the relentless hammering of: Buy!  Buy more!  Buy even more!  You need all this stuff to play the game!

I know it’s not really true (especially that last sentence), but that’s what it felt like.  And frankly, I have to admit, the hammering is beginning to flatten my enthusiasm for 40K.  I very much want to keep up with this game, but I don’t even intend to buy most of this stuff and I still feel overwhelmed.

It’s turned into an avalanche and I’m getting buried.  And it’s just halfway through the year.  We haven’t even got to Apocalypse and the Space Marines yet…

Hobby Challenge June: Nothing

Yeah, nothing.  I hadn’t planned on a break, but real life once again reared its ugly head and I won’t have the time to do very much hobby in June.

On the bright side, I’ll be posting July’s project very early.  Within a few days, I hope.
